Grounded in heritage, driven by markets

Merlin Rajah stands at the intersection of technology, markets, and people, quietly shaping how capital moves across borders while never losing sight of where his journey began.

From Chatsworth in Durban to the global trading floors that influence billions daily, his story is one of discipline, cultural pride, and leadership rooted in service. This is a narrative about building systems that last and people who rise with them.

I am a proud South African, deeply shaped by my Indian heritage and my upbringing in Chatsworth, Durban, a place alive with culture, history, and community. Growing up there taught me early lessons about hard work, humility, and the importance of staying grounded, no matter how far your ambitions take you.

My family valued respect, togetherness, and perseverance, and those values have remained constant anchors throughout my life. Chatsworth was more than a neighbourhood, it was a classroom. It taught me how different cultures coexist, how resilience is built quietly, and how community shapes character.

What matters most to me today is honouring where I come from, creating meaningful opportunities for others, and building a legacy rooted in integrity, purpose, and pride in both my heritage and my African identity.

My career began at Alexander Forbes, where I worked as a fund administrator in Group Life. It was my first exposure to the professional world, and it taught me how to engage confidently with clients, communicate clearly, and take responsibility for outcomes. Those early lessons became foundational.

From there, I moved into IT at Discovery. This chapter sharpened my technical skills and gave me a deep appreciation for systems, processes, and technology-driven problem-solving. I began to understand how infrastructure and innovation work together behind the scenes to enable scale and efficiency.

It was my nearly ten years at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, however, that truly defined my professional trajectory. At the JSE, I immersed myself in the mechanics of electronic trading — from trading systems and market rules to regulatory frameworks and the technical architecture that underpins modern markets. I learned how markets function at scale and how trust, liquidity, and precision are built through robust systems.

That foundation opened doors beyond South Africa. I travelled extensively, engaging with some of the world’s largest global trading firms, many of whom continue to trade billions daily on our exchange.

I am deeply proud of the role I played in strengthening market liquidity and positioning the JSE as a credible, competitive player on the global stage.

Education has always been a parallel journey alongside my career. I began studying an NDip in IT Programming, completing two years before relocating to Johannesburg in pursuit of broader opportunity.

While working, I completed a BCom in Investment Management, which deepened my understanding of financial markets and strengthened my analytical approach.

More recently, I completed the Absa Transcend Programme with the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business, focusing on data science and leadership. The programme included immersions in Kenya and Ghana — experiences that expanded my understanding of African markets and reinforced the importance of designing solutions that work for our continent, not just importing global models.

Throughout my career, I’ve been privileged to contribute to some of South Africa’s most transformative market initiatives. In 2012, I was part of the team that implemented a new equities trading system at the JSE — a foundational upgrade that reshaped how the market operated. I later led the build-out of the JSE’s colocation data centre solutions, driving some of the highest client adoption figures during my tenure.

I also played a key role in migrating Equity Derivatives and Currency Futures onto new trading platforms, working on product structures, billing models, and client-facing solutions that supported market growth and innovation.

My journey at Absa reflects continuous progression and trust. I joined as an Equities Electronic Sales Trader, moved into Head of Equities Electronic Sales, and then into Head of Equities Electronic Product.

This year, I stepped into a broader leadership role as Head of E-Sales and Client Services across asset classes, a milestone that represents both personal growth and the confidence placed in me to help shape Absa’s digital markets strategy.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my career has been positioning South Africa and Absa on the global stage. Since 2015, I’ve designed and led international roadshows across Europe, the Middle East, India, and Asia, successfully attracting clients from Singapore, Germany, the Netherlands, Dubai, the UK, and India into our franchise.

These efforts significantly expanded our global client base and strengthened South Africa’s visibility as a sophisticated trading destination.

I’ve also been deeply involved in delivering advanced technology solutions from high-frequency trading infrastructure and smart order routing to analytics for transition management and algorithmic trading tools. But through all of this, the client has always remained central. Technology only matters if it enables people to do business seamlessly.

Equally important to me is people. Over the years, I’ve made it a priority to identify and nurture young talent in this highly specialised field. Handpicking and mentoring individuals who have gone on to build thriving careers has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey. Creating those pathways is a responsibility I take seriously.

My leadership philosophy is grounded in clarity and accountability. I believe people do their best work when they understand the “why,” feel trusted to own the “how,” and are supported to grow beyond their perceived limits. I lead with transparency, set high standards, and prioritise excellence without sacrificing humanity. Diverse teams make us stronger, and leadership, to me, is ultimately an act of service.

The greatest challenges I’ve faced came when stepping into roles with high expectations and steep learning curves, where failure felt costly. Moving from technical roles into client-facing leadership required confidence, preparation, and the courage to speak up in rooms where I was still learning. What I learned is that readiness is built through action. Capability grows in the doing.

My career legacy lives at the intersection of markets, technology, and people. I’ve helped modernise critical infrastructure, bring global firms into South Africa’s markets, and build systems that continue to create value long after the work is done. Just as importantly, I’ve invested in people and that, to me, is the legacy that lasts.
