A Marketer shaped by determination

Keneilwe Ntaolang’s journey moves with quiet power from Ga-Rankuwa lessons in dignity and resilience, to bold career reinvention, to award-winning performance marketing. Her legacy centres people, building teams, lifting talent, and proving that leadership with heart can still deliver measurable impact.

I am shaped by my culture, my family, and the community that raised me. Growing up as a young Black girl in Ga-Rankuwa, I witnessed strength in its purest and quietest form. In my neighbourhood, many people were blind, yet they refused to let the absence of sight dim their vision for their futures.

Some worked at a local workshop crafting beautiful furniture out of cane, using their hands, skill, and determination to provide for their families against all odds. Their resilience became one of my first lessons in dignity and perseverance.

At home, I was raised by two incredible women, my mother and my grandmother. They were the pillars of our family, women who worked tirelessly, sacrificed endlessly, and carried both strength and softness in equal measure.

Through them I learned what hard work looks like, what love sounds like, and what it means to build a better life one choice at a time.

My upbringing did more than shape me, it grounded me. It taught me to honour where I come from, to value community, and to understand that greatness often grows in unexpected places.

It was a scary move. It required humility. But it reminded me that trusting God truly moves mountains.

My early career unfolded in ways I never imagined. During my final year at Tshwane University of Technology, I was selected as one of Media24’s Top 12 Student Marketers of the Year, an opportunity that opened doors I hadn’t even dreamed of. That recognition led to my first role as an intern at Media24, where I worked as an advertising consultant.

Those early years formed my foundation. I learned media, advertising sales, client management, and audience strategy and I gained skills that taught me how to navigate complexity, build relationships, and deliver value. Looking back, I can see how much those early lessons still live in how I work today.

After five years, though, I began to feel stuck. Growth was slow, and opportunity felt out of reach. So I made a decision that changed everything, I chose faith over fear. I started again from the bottom and joined the Massmart Graduate Programme.

At Massmart, I stepped into the world of analytics, a space that allowed me to combine what I had learned in advertising and client work with data-driven decision-making.

I partnered with buying teams and worked on Joint Business Plans with major suppliers, learning how to connect insights to action, strategy to execution, and relationships to results.

That leap of faith became the turning point in my career. It proved to me that none of my experiences were wasted. They built me, stretched me, and prepared me.

Education has always been an anchor in my life. I started at TUT, completing my National Diploma in Marketing, the foundation that sparked my passion for media, consumer behaviour, and strategic communication.

Over time, I continued investing in my development. I completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Management in Marketing at the University of Cape Town, which strengthened my strategic and analytical lens.

I completed two impactful programmes at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS): Strategic Leadership in Times of Uncertainty and Change, which strengthened my leadership approach and ability to navigate complexity, and Foundation in Retail Management, which gave me a strong understanding of retail dynamics, a knowledge base that later became essential in my Massmart analytics and supplier growth work. I also completed the certificate in Management as a Leader programme at Wits Business School, which shaped my approach to influence, decision-making, and leading with clarity and empathy. My learning has never been limited to the classroom.

My career became an extension of my education, sharpening my skills across media, analytics, digital platforms, and performance marketing. My career milestones reflect growth and trust.

At Massmart, before the graduate programme even ended, I was offered a permanent position. Soon after, I was entrusted to lead Joint Business Planning for Cambridge Foods, one of Massmart’s major chains. That opportunity stretched me and confirmed that I could carry responsibility, drive growth, and deliver results across teams.

Another milestone came at ZAlebs, where I was part of the team that helped transform the platform into one of South Africa’s most trusted celebrity news sites. The growth we achieved in audience engagement, credibility, and content strategy remains one of my proudest accomplishments and it strengthened my expertise in content and digital audience strategy.

A further defining moment was my promotion to Team Manager at OUTsurance just one year after joining. That promotion restored and strengthened my confidence as a leader, proof that I could adapt quickly, lead performance, and build momentum in new environments.

Along the way, my work has also been recognised through awards and breakthrough campaigns including a Bronze Bookmark Award in 2016, another Bronze Bookmark Award in 2024, and a Bronze YouTube Works Award in 2025.

I was also part of a pioneering team that executed Africa’s first successful TikTok Click-to-Chat campaign an experience that confirmed what I believe about innovation: progress belongs to those who are brave enough to try first. When I think about legacy, I think about people.

My career legacy is rooted in the lives I have touched, the teams I have built, and the individuals I have helped grow. More than titles or awards, I want to be remembered as a leader who created opportunities for others, someone who believed in people before they fully believed in themselves.

I have always tried to build environments where people feel seen, supported, and stretched. My legacy lives in the moment someone finds their confidence again, earns a promotion, or discovers a strength they didn’t know they had, simply because I gave them a chance and walked alongside them.

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced has not been the work itself, but navigating people who do not share the philosophy of leading with heart. In some environments, leadership rooted in empathy, integrity, and humanity is not always recognised.

At times, I have encountered people who could not fully see my value because I chose compassion over ego, people over power, and what is right over what is popular. That challenge strengthened me. It taught me resilience, emotional intelligence, and the courage to remain authentic regardless of who is watching. It shaped the leader I am becoming, grounded, empathetic, and unwavering in my belief that leadership with heart is leadership that truly transforms.

If I had to summarise my career story in one sentence, it would be this: My career is a story of courage, faith, and reinvention, rising from humble beginnings to become a leader who transforms teams, drives impact, and lifts others as I grow.

My mentors and leaders have believed in me before I fully believed in myself. And I’ve also learned from the juniors who trusted me to guide them because mentorship is not only something you receive, it is something you become.

My vision for the future is to keep growing as a leader who creates impact through people, strategy, and innovation. I want to build teams and businesses that thrive on creativity, data, and purpose while mentoring the next generation to reach their potential.

I want my legacy to be leadership that prioritises humanity, integrity, and excellence, transforming organisations and inspiring others to achieve what they once thought impossible.
